What a fantastic game last night! There were so many positive things that we witnessed that hopefully I'll be able to recall them all.
Defense: To put it mildly, they were bored and we like to keep it that way. I spoke with one defender after the game and he said he had the time to work on some "new moves" he'd been practicing at home. What a luxury it was for our defenders to have more time to execute and send great passes into the mid. The couple of times the opposition did break into our half, the defenders were ready and handily stopped their progression. Well done!
Midfield: Most of the game was played here to attack and some of the biggest plays that enabled goals were started in the mid. One midfielder in particular gave us our first goal when he made a great first touch on a pass from defense, directed away from the opposition (switched his motion) and sent a long service ball to a striker, splitting the defense. Our defensive mid position was also extremely pivotal on both a defensive stance and pushing our mid-to-attack posture. So many opportunities were created by well timed and executed passes from the mids.
Attack: I wish we would have kept stats last night on the number of shots on goal. We had so many opportunities to score with all of the shots and break aways. With good service passes from mids, our attackers, wings & strikers, were able to capitalize with strong, open and most of the time straight one-on-one attacks on goal. 2nd half gave us the edge by landing the 3 goals. Our wings played a lot of balls in from the corners. Our strikers were there for the shots, crosses and follows. At times it felt like practice when I call for our defenders to play at 50% to allow more shots from our offense. We just penetrated and kept on shooting. Great success!
Hopefully the parents enjoyed watching the game as much as we enjoyed coaching. There was so much energy from the players. Those on the bench were begging to get in and up front to have their shot on goal. Defenders were clamoring to come forward and have their shot. Teams always change (ours has a lot in the last few years) but it was nice to pull off the 3-0 victory after just a year ago they spanked our team 1-7. Congrats on the win and thanks to the keepers for only touching the ball once :) See you on Sat.
